Victory!

The referendum on the four ordinances succeeded! The voters have spoken. All four measures were resoundingly defeated.

    Measure Ordinance

    No Votes           Yes Votes
    17.53 Solid Waste & Nuisance Ordinance           76.48%           23.52%
    17.54 Code Enforcement Officer Ordinance           79.24%           10.76%
    17.55 Hearings Officer Ordinance           80.15%           19.85%
    17.56 Environmental Health Ordinance           77.47%           22.53%

The Josephine County Republican Central Committee voted to pass a resolution opposing these measures last June. Since then, we have received letters of support from the Republican Central Committees in 20 other Oregon counties, as well as from the Oregon Republican Party. These ordinances were badly written and overreaching, and we are very glad that they were defeated at the ballot box.

Voter turnout was high for an off year election. According to County Clerk, Art Harvey, voter turnout usually runs about 40% in off year elections. We had a 49.9% turnout to defeat these ordinances.

This is a big win for Jospehine County!

Election Update

The ballots are almost all counted, and the results for County Commissioner Position #3 are indicating there’s likely to be an automatic recount. Oregon state law requires an automatic recount if the difference between the two candidates is 0.2% (one fifth of a percentage point) or less. Currently, the difference is 0.19%, with Bob Just trailing Cherryl Walker by only 66 votes.

Here’s the current status:

    County Commissioner, Position 3

      Cherryl Walker         17,123         49.83%
      Bob Just         17,057         49.64%
      WRITE-IN            181          0.53%
      Total         34,361
      Over Votes             17
      Under Votes          6,202

2012 Election Results

  • Keith Heck has been elected County Commissioner for Position #2.
  • The race for County Commissioner Position #3 is too close to call at this point, with Cherryl Walker leading Bob Just by 80 votes when the polls closed at 8:00, with about 2,000 votesr left to be counted.
  • Eve Arce will be our new County Treasurer.
  • Art Harvey was re-elected as our County Clerk.

Congratulations to all our Republican elected and re-elected public officials!  While this is a sad day for our nation, we’re glad to have such great representation at the local level!

Please come on down and join the celebration!!!

Ballot Counting Machine Certification

Before every election, the ballot counting machine at the county courthouse is tested and certified to ensure that ballots are counted accurately on election day. Citizens observers are encouraged to attend the certification process and verify that the ballot counting machine is functioning accurately.

If you would like to attend and help validate the ballot counting process, you can meet with other Republicans at the Powderhorn Cafe at 8:15 AM on Tuesday, October 30. The group will proceed to the courthouse from there.

If you’re planning to attend, please contact Josephine County Republican Party chair Bill Ertel at 541-218-6538 or e-mail him at billertel@aol.com.

Get Out The Vote!

The ballots have been mailed, and we’re in the home stretch!

There are more registered Republicans than registered Democrats in Josephine County, but voter turnout among Republicans has been low in recent elections. It’s absolutely critical this year that every Republican votes! — You can help.

We need volunteers to contact Republicans to remind them to vote. We will have access to records from the County Clerk on which ones have already voted, so we’ll only be calling people who haven’t voted yet.

If you can help make telephone calls to Get Out The Vote, please contact Ron Ruby at 659-2285 or Ron rkruby@q.com.

Every vote counts!

We’ve reserved a private viewing area, and there’s sure to be a lively discussion following the debate!
